The best space games on PC give you the best excuse to take a virtual trip to space. There are planets and solar systems to explore and plenty of games to do it in. In space, you can craft, you can build, you can manage, and you can survive. The endless black expanse is, well, endless when it comes the types of games you can enjoy in it.
Whether you want to explore strange new worlds, seduce weird aliens, or become a feared galactic bounty hunter, there's a space game for everyone on PC. The games below are the absolute best options to try if you need to take a break from Earth.
Hardspace: Shipbreaker is a game set in the future where cutting apart ships pays the bills, but not much else. This first-person destruction simulator has you learning the craft, taking jobs, and refining your skills so that eventually you can pay off your crippling pile of debt. It's creative and monotonous in a way that blue collar jobs often can be. And it uses that to underline the vital role of undervalued and overworked labor in a world run by billion dollar people and billion dollar corporations.
Year 2014Developer Creative AssemblyLink Official site (opens in new tab)Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen, is hunted through a dilapidated space station by a xenomorph in this incredible survival horror. Taking its cues from Ridley Scott's original 1979 film, it's a masterpiece of slow-burning tension. And the station itself, Sevastopol, is a great example of lo-fi sci-fi, with chunky retro-futuristic tech and eerie flickering lights. One of the most faithful movie adaptations ever, and a great horror game in its own right.Read more What Alien: Isolation gets right that Alien: Covenant gets wrong (opens in new tab)
Year 2017Developer Suspicious DevelopmentsLink Steam (opens in new tab)In this top-down sci-fi action game you board spaceships and use an array of weapons and gadgets to take out the crew. The genius lies in how much creativity you're given to play your own way, inspired by the best immersive sims. And how you react to the chaos that erupts when your presence on the ship becomes known makes Heat Signature a powerful anecdote generator. Things might not always go to plan, but that's just part of the fun.Read more 8 sadistic ways to take out guards in Heat Signature (opens in new tab)
Year 2016Developer Misfits AtticLink Official site (opens in new tab)Despite being viewed entirely through a retro-futuristic computer interface, Duskers is one of the scariest, most tense sci-fi horror games on PC. In it you pilot a fleet of drones searching derelict spaceships for fuel, upgrades, and clues about why the galaxy is so mysteriously devoid of life. The ships you board are crawling with strange creatures, which makes looking for clues in those narrow, dark corridors an especially nerve-racking experience.Read more Duskers review (opens in new tab)
This unique twist on the space sim shares the trading and exploration elements of games such as Elite Dangerous, but feels more like commanding a submarine. You don't see space itself; just a series of utilitarian rooms full of screens and machinery. There's a lot to manage, and you play several roles at once: pilot, engineer, comms officer. But despite the limited view of your surroundings, you still feel like you're hurtling through space in a starship.
A stylish game of galactic conquest. Not the broadest or deepest 4X strategy game on PC, but an atmospheric afternoon-killer that blends strategic decision making with a beautiful presentation. Set in a vivid sci-fi universe, the game lets you explore mysterious star systems, discover the secrets of ancient races, build colonies on distant planets, and encounter aliens to meet and conquer.

The games in Sid Meier's Civilization franchise make forincredibly memorable moments, whether extraordinarily frustratingor exhilarating. To commemorate Firaxicon 2014, we want you toshare the unforgettable episodes in your Civ history. Your commentcould be featured in an upcoming video!
My first contact with the Civilization franchise was inthe lower elementary school. Our teacher would put a transparencyfull of text on the overhead projector and then disappear behindthe computer on his desk for the rest of the lecture while wecopied the contents of the transparency to our notebooks. Duringthe recess we sneaked to see what was so interesting. Turns out itwas a game called Civilization (1991). We didn't know anyEnglish back then and couldn't understand anything, but obviouslyit was a great game. I tried to acquire a demo, but only got someslide-set like non-playable introduction thing. Back then there wasno \"World Wide Web\" to download games from.
In the days of ancient civilizations, videogame information wasshared in the form of manuals printed on clay tablets orhieroglyphics on papyrus scrolls. Then later, monks would sit atdesks and write out videogame facts until the printing press wasinvented. And now, we are in a new era, where videogame informationlives on the Internet, and thousands of players like you can add oredit or change or annotate information on Civ.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing Alpha Centauri when it first cameout, and again at times over the years. I even made a wikia forjust that game years ago, and then recently merged it with thiswikia after being told this would be the official wikia for the newgame. I am really looking forward to Beyond Earth, the videos I seeof gameplay, and information I read about it, making it seem ratherdesirable to play. DreamFocus 02:59, September 6, 2014(UTC) 59ce067264
